Guidelines for Approval to Teach 600-Level Graduate Courses in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources

Beginning with the 2001-2002 Graduate Catalog of the University of Tennessee, the authority for approval to teach courses at the 600-level will rest in the colleges. The CASNR Graduate Council was charged with developing the Guidelines for Approval to Teach 600-Level Graduate Courses. The guiding principles used to develop these guidelines were 1) to be consistent with rules established by the Graduate School and 2) to ensure that those approved to teach at the 600-level were capable of this level of instruction.

Therefore, the Graduate Council recommends the adoption of the following guidelines and procedures:

Guidelines to teach 600-level courses:

  1. The faculty member must be at the rank of assistant professor or above. No instructors will be approved to teach 600-level courses.
  2. The faculty member should have previously taught one graduate level course.
  3. The department head shall write a letter of endorsement and submit it to the CASNR Dean for approval.
  4. Under special circumstances, exceptions can be submitted by the department head to the CASNR Dean for approval.
